November 1, 2011 Newsletter
President pro-tem-heavy on the pro-Fernando called the meeting to order as Mickey’s big hand hit the twelve. Jim Dennison led the pledge and the Reverend Jack Wartes prayed for all of us. Alan Holmes paid for stealing the Halloween appropriate mallet and Dr. Steve Buyers subsidized his entire table for the theft of the bell, his contribution being large enough to cover the mysterious appearance of the maple mallet under an unoccupied table.
Table-of-the-day, 3, earned the treasury $5 and secret greeter/birthday boy, Peter Zouvas, caught a few of us napping. It is a stretch to call today’s entertainment humorous, so we’ll just report that Dr. Steve told a bad joke about flies inside a light bulb, Bert told a worse toe joke, Roger Storer had an unusually poor computer story and finally, David Gee shared a supposedly true story, that turned out to be simply a new rendition of the age-old where-did-Herbie-go fable.
There will be an Optimist evening event held in a Montgomery Field airplane hangar, on November 16, at 5:00PM. The venue is courtesy of Dr. Steve Buyers and the club will provide gourmet food and cocktails for the low, low price of $20 per person. Optimists are encouraged to bring spouses and guests. Please pay Tom Lewis prior to the event. Ken Stimeling paid to announce the a YMCA Family Services Christmas party, to be held at Cole’s Carpet Morena Blvd. location, December 1. The cost is $50 per person that includes unlimited food and beverage.
Ken Stimeling, this time wearing his membership chairman hat, encouraged all of us to invite guests and think about membership as we go about our business. Roger Storer paid for finishing his first triathlon. Bob Bradbury paid a fine and warned us of his wife’s excellent markswomanship. Bob Silides went drinking and did a little fishing at Bahia Los Angeles. Larry Baumann enjoyed a successful hunting trip in Mexico and attended a 45th high school reunion. Dean Sutter also had a good Mexican hunting experience. Barry Rogers has been traveling in wine country and elsewhere and Jack Wartes paid for the Navy doing something.
Bob Ehlers and Jim Dennison put the flags up last Sunday and Tom Grenis and Tom Dominguez will do it next Sunday. Dean Sutter needs three helpers to trim trees along the flag route, for a couple of hours on Sunday. Two people stepped up but he needs one more to make it work. Please call him and volunteer.
Point Loma Optimist member Russ Valone, CEO of MarketPointe Realty Advisors, made an interesting presentation regarding the current status of the San Diego residential real estate market. His company tracks residential trends, using their expertise to advise residential builders. We learned that San Diego new home sales are off 5.6% so far, and that 2011 will be the worst year for new home sales in San Diego, since WWII. Although the market is bleak, San Diego is in better shape than other California counties.
David Gee left $5 richer and Bob Bradbury won the $10 prize. Carrying on his personal two-week long tradition, Bob Silides won the opportunity to draw a card other than the joker.
Next week, we will be treated to a presentation by SPAWARS. Be there or be square!
