The grey sky hovering over the San Diego Yacht Club failed to dull the Optimism expressed in Jim Dennison’s pledge and Jack Wartes’ prayer. We haven’t discussed the song for a while, mainly because there is there are precious few musical clues found therein. Sergeant-at-arms-pro-tem-for-a-minute, Bert Barclay, shamelessly admitted to the stealing of the colorful hammer and then found the maple mallet under an unmanned table. Surely the coward who paced it there will come forward by next week.
Table #6 yielded only $2 but controversially late, secret greeter, Don Gruhl, raked it in. Peter Palmiotto was a guest for the second time and Dean Sutter introduced New Zealander, Robert Allport, who is visiting San Diego with his family as they continue on a round-the-world sailing adventure.
Sergeant-at-Arms, Silides, showed up just in time to fine himself for his tardiness and a weekend in Mexicali. Woody paid for a family weekend at a dude ranch and the celebration of his grandson’s first birthday. Vernon Lee paid for Aztec football and basketball success as well as an appearance on Fox network, national news. Peter Zouvas paid for Wisconsin football success and then joined John Murphy in paying a fine for not wearing a badge, after which somebody performed a poor Humphrey Bogart imitation. Dean Sutter and his son went wild turkey hunting; shot one, then ate it. John Benya took his family to the Pine Hills Lodge for a Thanksgiving celebration. Ron Lauderbach’s daughter Alison announced her engagement and Jack Wartes paid for Washington football success.
Ken Stimeling generously contributed to announce the gala YMCA Family services Christmas celebration to be held on the evening of December 1, at Coles Carpet, Morena Blvd. A contribution of $50 will yield a delicious array of food and beverages, as well as the opportunity to purchase priceless treasures. And speaking of good deals, be sure to make your reservation for the Point Loma Optimist Christmas party, to be held at the Lauderbach’s, on December 15. Please pay Tom Lewis the low, low price of $30 per person. We have reserved the same, wonderful caterer we had last year at the Butler-Seman’s, and our own sommelier, Roger Storer, will procure the fine wine. Vernon Lee announced the grudge golf match against the Bonita Optimist Club, to be held 12/6. Call Vernon for details.
Thank you Peter A. Zouvas, Vince Glorioso and his father for the flags last Sunday. Next Sunday: Tom Lewis and Ron Cota.
Tom Lewis introduced his friend, lobbyist, John Dadian, who filled us in on local and national political races. He told us that major political parties normally nominate the heir apparent, from the previous primary, but that could change this time. San Diego political consultants are, more than usually, involved in national presidential primary fund raising. John finished with a good oversight of the San Diego Mayor race and the San Diego City Council redistricting. Guest, Peter Palmiotto selflessly donated back his $5 winnings but Peter Zouvas, with no remorse, crammed the $10 bill into his empty pocket. Ken Stimeling drew a card that was not a Joker, allowing the 50/50 pot to increase.
Next week we will enjoy an exciting program from the San Diego Americas Cup community. Come learn about these lighter-than-air, plastic and exotic metal sailing, sea rockets. BE THERE OR BE SQUARE!!!!!!
