Youth Appreciation Day 2012 was an overwhelming success again!  Vernon Lee, the program chairman, started the program by informing the attendees of the Club's contributions and activities in the Point Loma Community.  Ten area schools participated by nominating a student to receive the annual award.  In addition to a certificate, each student will receive a $200 US savings bond or equivalent.  There were a couple of "firsts" for this program.  One of them was the invitation for each teacher or principal to grab the microphone and list the reasons why their student was nominated.  The other "first" was the live acceptance of the award from a Loma Portal Elementary student via Skype who was in Italy.   Again, our Club was proud of the recipients and their contributions to their respective schools.  The recipients were Marielly Benitez (Bernard Elementary), Joseph Rodela (Cabrillo Elementary), Melina Curran ( Loma Portal Elementary), Lindsey Drew (Ocean Beach Elementary), Sara Nielsen (Silvergate Elementary), Vanessa Ruiz (Sunset View Elementary), Nikki Silva (Sacred Hearts Academy of Ocean Beach), Caroline Horne (St Charles Borromeo Academy), Ryan Llanes (Warren Walker) and  Tatyanna Torres (Dewey Elementary).

Again, we congratulate the students, their teachers, principals and above all, their parents for their support and participation.

On May 28th the Union Tribune ran an article discussing the community of Point Loma.  We were very excited to see our flag program was one of the topics discussed as an important part of the community traditions.  "If it's a Sunday, federal holiday or other important day in U.S. history, you'll pass by 168 American flags placed along a two-mile stretch of Rosecrans Street by members of the Point Loma Optimist Club.  They've been doing it since 1964."

Our Point Loma Optimist St. Patricks Day Party was fun. Almost 60 Optimists, spouses and friends consumed a lot of corned beef, cabbage, boiled potatoes, Irish soda bread, and Irish cheer.

The 2010 Point Loma Optimist Christmas Party was at the Seman Estate over looking the Harbor and City lights.  The party was a hugh success.  David Gee played a terrific Santa Claus and a good time was had by all.  Enjoy the pictures!

Bert Barclay won the club championship and Jonathan Marselis was a repeat winner overall.  The affair was well attended and the club managed a profit of 3,000 dollars towards our youth programs. Kudos to Bert Barclay for organizing and coordinating the tournament.

Our August 31st meeting featured Barbara Samilson,  the principal at Pt Loma High School.  She updated us on her recent school programs and thanked us for our continually support and involvement with the high school.  Additionally, on September 14th, Ryan Schramm came to speak to us about his recent Eagle Scout project which our club sponsored. He is in the scout uniform.  The gentleman in the suit is Bruce Drake who gave us a history of the Scout program in the area.

On August 24th, Commander Scott Greenfield was our guest speaker, discussing  "Combat Marketing: What makes the best Us Navy Seal canidates?" San Diego is a good source for candidates with currently 2600 seals hoping for 3600. Also, we inducted a new member to our club:  Russ Valone sponsored by Tom Lewis.

Youth Appreciation Day is one of the highlight events during the year.  This year was no exception as Christiaan Nazarian did an outstanding job in recognizing students from the ten schools in the Point Loma/Ocean Beach area.  In addition to their award certificates, each student received a $200 US Savings Bond.  Congratulations to the students and the Christiaan for doing a fine job-again!

The annual Golden Grand Gala was held at the Courtyard Marriott at Liberty Station on May 7, 2010.  Approximately 180 members and their guests attended the event.  Chairing the event was Rob Sauvajot with Don Gruhl as the Silent Auction chair.  Preliminary financial numbers indicate that the event will net the Club about $27,000 to support the youth in the Point Loma area.

The Boy Scouts led by new member Tom Grenis provided the color guard to open the evening.  The evening continued with Tom Lewis at the mike assisted along the way by Bert Barclay.  The Lauderbachs, Ron and Kathy, gave us a brief background on the acquisition of the chateau in Provence, France.  A weeks stay at this chateau with airfare was the grand prize in the opportunity drawing.  Most of the prize winners were guests of the members.   Thanks to Rob and Don and all the members of the Golden Grand and Silent auction committees and to all the volunteers that helped make this event a success!  Click here for more photos!
