Oratorical Contest
This year's 2011 Oratorical Contest is set for March 22, 2011
at our 7:00am breakfast meeting. Students from Correa Jr. high (middle
school) will compete for a chance for a $2,500.00 prize at subsequent contests
in the event of success at our club level.
Contestants will respond to the following topic:
"If I were leader of the free world, the first issue I would address would be ... "
Contestants must enter through an Optimist Club and complete a detailed application. The rules of the contest are specific and the students are aware of them and are scored accordingly, in addition to their speech delivery and content.
The Optimist Oratorical Contest gives youngsters the chance to speak to the world. More than $150,000 in college scholarships funded by the Optimist International Foundations is awarded annually from this program.
First conducted in 1928, this is the second most popular Optimist International Program. Nearly 2,000 clubs participate in this program each year. The winners at the Club level receive medallions and Zone winners receive a plaque. Districts have the opportunity to provide two $2,500 scholarships or a first place scholarship of $2,500, a second place scholarship of $1,500, and a third place scholarship of $1,000.
